You should have been given some gentle range of motion exercises to perform while in hospital. Continue with these exercises while at home for the first few weeks but err on the side of resting your knee rather than pushing through any pain or swelling.
Rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction takes about six months. This means that you will take part in a structured rehabilitation program with your physiotherapist and gradually return to normal activities and sport.
You need to keep your bulky outer dressing on your knee for at least 72 hours. You can remove the bulky dressing after 72 hours if they become loose or dirty however it is important that you leave the sticky dressings on your knee for 10-14 days unless changed by a nurse.
You will be given a prescription for Targin to take regularly and another prescription for Endone for breakthrough pain. Take your regular medications as prescribed by your GP. If your knee is more painful after 3-4 days, please phone our rooms for advice.
Before discharge from hospital, a post-operative visit to Dr Hartley will be organised. If you don't have an appointment please phone our rooms.
